Abstract

The prevalence of childhood bronchial asthma is about 10% and its incidence is gradually increasing every year.
Methylxanthines have been used since mid. of 19th century, but the nanow therapeutic range and its complicated pharmacokinetics have been a limiting factor for its clinical use.
Recently, slow-release theophylline preparations and reliable theophylline assays have increased therapeutic efficacy of this drug in asthma therapy. It is today the most frequently prescribed oral antiasthmatic drug worldwide for maintenance therapy despite all its extrapulmoary side effect.
We briefly review the pharmacological action and clinical application of theophylline in this article.
